Memoriesareapreciousthing.Theyarewhatmakeuswhowearetoday.But,whathappenswhenthosememoriesstarttofadeaway?Whathappenswhenweforgetthepeopleweonceknewandthethingsweoncedid?It'sascarythought,isn'tit?ButforJohn,itwasareality.Hehadforgottensomuchofhispastthathecouldn'tevenrecognizehimselfinthemirror.However,thatallchangedwhenhestumbleduponanoldphotoalbuminhisattic.John'shandstrembledasheliftedthephotoalbumfromthedustybox.Hehadneverseenitbefore,yetitwasfilledwithpicturesofhimasachild.Heflippedthroughthepages,marvelingattheimagesofhisyoungerselfwithhisparents,siblings,andfriends.Memoriesfloodedhismind,memorieshehadforgottenalongtimeago.Oneparticularphotocaughthiseye.Itwasofhimandhisbestfriend,Tom.Theywerebothgrinningfromeartoear,holdingupafishtheyhadcaughtatthenearbylake.Johncouldn'trecallthedaybutcouldfeelthewarmthofthesunonhisskinandsmellthefishyscentofthelake.
AsJohncontinuedtoflipthroughthealbum,hebegantorealizehowmanymemorieshehadlost.Hecouldn'tremembermostofhischildhoodorevenhisteenageyears.Itwasasifsomeonehaderasedhispast,leavinghimfeelinglostandalone.Withanewfoundsenseofdetermination,Johndecidedtotryandrediscoverthememorieshehadlost.Hespenthourspouringoveroldphotoalbums,journals,andscrapbooks,tryingtopiecetogetherhispast.Itwasn'taneasytask,andthereweretimeswhenJohnfeltlikegivingup.However,herefusedtolethisforgottenmemoriesremainlostforever.Slowlybutsurely,hebegantorememberthings,people,andplacesthathadoncebeensoimportanttohim.Oneday,whilerummagingthroughhiscloset,Johnfoundanoldshoebox.Itwasfilledwithknick-knacksfromhischildhood,likeseashells,abaseballglove,andakeychainfromhisfirstcar.Eachitemheldamemory,andasJohnheldtheminhishands,hefeltasenseofnostalgiawashoverhim.

HereachedouttoTom'sdaughterandaskedifhecouldreconnectwithhisfriend.Sheagreed,andsoonenough,JohnandTomweretalkingonthephonelikeoldtimes.TalkingtoTombroughtbacksomanymemories,memoriesthatJohnhadburieddeepwithinhimself.Theyreminiscedaboutoldtimes,andJohnfeltlikehewasrelivinghispastalloveragain.TominvitedJohntohisdaughter'swedding,andJohneagerlyaccepted.AshestoodbesideTom,watchinghisdaughterwalkdowntheaisle,Johnfeltasenseofgratitudewashoverhim.Hewasgratefulforthememorieshehadrediscovered,gratefulforthefriendshehadmadealongtheway,andgratefulforthechancetoreconnectwithhisbestfriend.Theweddingwaslikeareunionofsorts.Johnsawoldclassmates,friends,andfamilymembershehadn'tseeninyears.Itwasabittersweetmoment,asherealizedjusthowmuchhehadmissedouton.
Afterthewedding,Johnreturnedhomefeelingasenseofclosure.Hehadrediscoveredhispastandwasreadytomoveforwardwithhislife.However,Johncouldn'tshakeoffthefeelingthattherewerestillmemorieshehadyettouncover.Itwasasiftherewerepiecesmissingfromthepuzzleofhislife,andhewasdeterminedtofindthem.Oneday,whiletakingawalkthroughhisoldneighborhood,Johnstumbleduponapark.Theparkwasrundownandforgotten,butsomethingaboutitseemedfamiliar.Ashelookedaround,memoriesfloodedhismind.Hesawhimselfplayingcatchwithhisdad,racinghisbikedownthehillwithhisfriends,andhavingpicnicswithhisfamily.Itwasasifthememorieswereimprintedontheverylandscapeofthepark.
Johnsatdownonabenchandclosedhiseyes.Heletthememorieswashoverhim,relivingeachmomentasifitwerehappeningrightthenandthere.Whenheopenedhiseyesagain,Johnfeltasenseofpeace.Hehadrediscoveredsomuchofhispast,andwhiletherewerestillmemorieshehadyettouncover,hewascontentwiththememorieshehadrediscovered.AsJohnwalkedawayfromthepark,herealizedthatmemorieswereliketreasures.Theywerepreciousandinvaluable,andoncetheywerelost,theycouldneverbefullyregained.However,healsorealizedthatmemoriescouldberediscovered,nomatterhowmuchtimehadpassed.Johnsmiledtohimself,knowingthathehadfoundhiswaybacktohimself.Hewasnolongerthepersonwhohadforgottenhispastbutrathersomeonewhohadrediscoveredit,piecebypiece.Heknewthathewouldcherishthesememoriesforeverandthattheywouldalwaysholdaspecialplaceinhisheart.
